Dixie State finishes second at Mustang Intercollegiate
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The No. 22 Dixie State men's golf team finished second overall with a total three-round score of 869 at the Mustang Intercollegiate tournament hosted by Western New Mexico.
The Red Storm shot a 285, its best score of the tournament in the third round to take sole possession of second place after finishing the first two rounds in a three-way tie. DSU edged out Cal State Monterey Bay by one stroke while host Western New Mexico took home first place with an 861.
Each golfer for the Red Storm saved his best for last, scoring their lowest round in the finals.
Donny Hopoi (Aiea, HI/Kamehameha) played his best golf of the year, finishing seventh overall and tops for Dixie State. He shot a 69 in the final round, his best of the event after rounds of 71 and 72, finishing at four-under for the tournament.
“We played really solid this week,” head coach Brad Sutterfield said. “All the guys contributed and it was a real team effort. Donny had his best showing so far and will take away a lot of confidence from this event. I am really proud of how we handled ourselves this week.”
Tying for 10th overall, Kenny You (Sandy, UT/Alta) finished even-par after a final round of 70. Dane Nelson (Farmington, UT/Davis) tied for 16th with a 73, matching his first two rounds, giving the Red Storm three golfers in the top 20 overall.
Cody Wass (West Haven, UT/Fremont) also recorded a 73 to help him to a 28th-place finish whileConnor Van Gilder (Saint George, UT/Dixie) posted a 73 as well, putting him in a tie for 70th at the tournament.
Dixie State will host the Pacific West Conference Golf Championships on April 20-22 in St. George at the Sunbrook Golf Course.
