Herman and Mathison shine for UVU on final day at Red Rocks

SEDONA, Ariz. – Seniors Hannah Herman and Heather Mathison each tied their all-time personal-best rounds on Saturday as the Utah Valley University women's golf team moved up three spots to finish in 14th place at the two-day Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona.
 
Herman led the way by carding an even par 72 while Mathison finished two shots behind her with a 2-over par 74. With the 72 on Saturday, Herman moved up 43 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 15th place with a two-day total of 151 (+7). Mathison too made a big jump on the final day to tie for 51st place at 12-over par (82-74—156).  
 
As a team, the Wolverines carded a 301 (+13) on Saturday move up from 17th to 14th. The 301 is the best score that UVU has carded at the course in five years and 20 strokes better than Friday's 321. Utah Valley finished in 14th with a tournament total of 622 (+46).

“I'm very happy for our amazing senior leaders, Hannah and Heather, whose four years of hard work paid off today,” said head coach Sue Nyhus. “In golf it sometimes seems the payoff never comes, but today in tough conditions the Wolverines came through.”
 
Junior Cassandra Lesa too played well for UVU as she finished in-between the two seniors. Lesa tied for 37th after putting up a 7-over 79 on Saturday. The Wolverine junior finished with a tournament total of 154 (+10) after scoring a 75 on Friday.
 
Sophomore Kimberly Nyhus also had a solid final round as she carded a 4-over par 76. Her 76 was nine shots better than the 85 she carded on Friday. Nyhus finished the tournament tied for 87th at 17-over (161).
 
Sophomore Monica Yeates rounded out UVU's field as she tied for 115th place with a tournament total of 172 (86-86).
 
Host Northern Arizona won the tournament at 21-over par (597) while Cal Poly took second (602) and Grand Canyon placed third (606).
 
GCU's Charlotte Jaengkit and Nebraska-Omaha's Sophie Peters tied for the individual medalist honors as they both finished at even par (144).
 
The two-day/36-hole tournament was contested at the Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona.
 
UVU will next head to St. George, Utah, for the SUU Invitational on March 12-13 and the BYU at Entrada Classic on March 16-17.
