SUU Women’s Golf Place Fourth in Grand Canyon Spring Invite
Miranda Reyes surges to top-10 finish
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – SUU women’s golf finished their third round of the Grand Canyon Spring Invite in fourth place. Three consistent rounds of 305, 309 and 302 helped the Thunderbirds to that fourth place finish. SUU placed three individuals in the top-15 of the tournament with Miranda Reyes leading the way in ninth place.
In the first round of the invite, SUU’s Monica Jung helped the team to fifth place on the day after shooting a 1-over-par 73. Teammates Rynae Baca and Taylor Viquelia had good day one rounds of 76 and 77 respectively.
Round two saw Viquelia make a move into the top-5 individually after shooting a 1-under-par 71. SUU moved up one spot after the second round into fourth place, shooting a 309 as a team. Jung kicked in a 76 and Reyes would start her move to the top of the leaderboard with a 78 in round 2.
Reyes made a big move in round three as she shot a tournament low round of 4-under-par 68. This would move her into the top-10 with a ninth place finish individually. The Thunderbirds as a team held off Wyoming by one-stroke to finish the Invite in fourth place overall. Every SUU golfer besides Reyes shot a 78 on day three to finish with a team score of 916, 52-over-par.
Out of 120 golfers, SUU placed three golfers in the top-15. The Thunderbirds finished above many Big Sky opponents including, Northern Colorado, Montana State and Weber State.
SUU head back down to Arizona for the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona on Feb. 28.
