Utah Valley Wins Loyola Golf Invitational Title
GOODYEAR, Ariz.—The Utah Valley University men's golf team won the team title at the Loyola Golf Invitational at Palm Valley Golf Club on Tuesday, shooting a three-round score of 868 (+4) to beat out 16 other teams. Brayden Eriksen tied for second individually while JT Timmons finished fourth.
“This is a big win for us,” said Utah Valley head coach Chris Curran. “The guys battled so hard. We leaked some oil coming down the stretch but found a way to get it done. I'm so proud of they played. It feels good to be back in the winner's circle.”
The title marks the first team championship for Utah Valley since the team finished first at the Battle of the Tetons tournament in 2011. The team championship marks UVU's third top-3 team finish of the season.
The Wolverines led the entire tournament, finishing six strokes ahead of Utah and Gonzaga, who finished in a tie for second place. DePaul finished third at 875 (+11), Missouri-Kansas City placed fifth at 878 (14) and Missouri carded a 880 (+16) to round out the top six.
Eriksen finished in a tie for second after shooting an even par 72 on Tuesday, carding a team-best five birdies in the final round. The senior shot a three-round score of 212 (70-70-72) to finish in the top-10 for the third time this season. He has placed in the top-3 two times this year.
Timmons recorded a 4-over-par 76 in the final round to tie for fourth place with a three-day total of 213 (67-70-76). With the fourth place finish, the sophomore finishes in the top-5 in back-to-back tournaments.
