SUU Men’s Golf Finish Tied for 11th at Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

Fidel Concepcion finishes tied for 16th individually

PALM DESERT, Calif. – SUU men’s golf finished tied for 11th at the end of the third and final round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday. Fidel Concepcion finished as the top individual performer for SUU, tied for 16th. The field included three top-35 teams and 9 top-100 players in the nation.

SUU golfers found themselves tied for ninth place after round one of the tournament with the University of Nevada. The team shot a 4-over par 292 led by Concepcion’s 70, Sammy Cole’s 71 and Tim Leonard’s 73.

Day two of the Intercollegiate saw the Thunderbirds drop four spots to 13th after shooting a 16-over par 304. Concepcion’s low score of 73 again led SUU, with Nic Booth kicking in a 75.

The third and final round had the Thunderbirds moving up two spots to 11th as Cole shot a 1-under par 71 and Concepcion, Leonard and Booth all shot a 4-over par 76.

SUU finished just behind Big Sky Conference preseason favorite Idaho, who finished ninth. Concepcion finished tied for 16th, ahead of three top-100 golfers. He shot a 3-over par 219 for the tournament. Cole finished the tournament with a score of 5-over par, placing him tied for 30th.

The Thunderbird men’s golf team will head to Sacramento next to participate in the Sacramento State Invitational on Mar. 9.
