Check out what has been happening in Utah Golf.

The ‘First Time Wasn’t the Charm’ for Summerhays, Finau

For the first time in their PGA Tour careers former Utah State Am champions Daniel Summerhays and Tony Finau got to play in the same group. It was a Pride Day for the Utah State Amateur at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club, and  it was the first time in the history of the PGA Tour that two state am champions from the same state were paired in the same group.

The fact that they also played each other in the championship match of the 2006 Utah State Am made it even more significant.

For the record, Finau defeated Summerhays for the State Am title in that 2006 match at Soldier Hollow. Summerhays won the State Am in 2000 at Oakridge against Billy Harvey and in 2001 at Wasatch Mountain against Ryan Job.

Former State Am champion (2008) Zac Blair also played in the tournament, but missed the cut.

As it turned out the first time playing together on the PGA Tour was not the charm as neither of them played their best golf. They started the round tied for 11th place and Summerhays dropped to 26th place with a round of 73, and Finau dropped to 59th place with a round of 77, and they won’t be playing together in the final round.

Retief Goosen is the tournament leader with rounds of 66-70-69 at minus eight. Summerhas stands in 26th on rounds of 66-74-73-213 at even par, and Finau stands at plus four on rounds of 70-70-77-217.
