Summerhays, Finau May Be Paired Together in Third Round at Riviera

Daniel Summerhays and Tony Finau had the same tee time for the second round of the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club, but they weren’t in the same foursome. Summerhays started on the number one tee and Finau started on number 10.

(Interestingly, going into the third round Summerhays and Finau have the same score and there is a possibility they could be paired together. If it happens it would be the first time the two have been paired together on the PGA Tour, and perhaps it would be the first time they’ve been paired together in a tournament since the 2006 Utah State Amateur championship match at Soldier Hollow—a match won by Finau. See the last paragraph for the odd circumstances regarding the third round pairings.)

Summerhays went into the second round tied for first place, but bled bogeys on the front nine and finished with a second round 74 which dropped him into a tie for 11th place at two under par at the halfway point. Summerhays has posted 66-74-140. Finau started the day four shots behind Summerhays but closed that gap and is also in the 11th place group at two under par. Finau has posted 70-70-140.

Retief Goosen, who was one of the five first round leaders, was the only one to break par in the second round. He is now the sole leader with rounds of 66-70-136, six under par.

Zac Blair shot 77-70-147 and missed the cut by two shots. Mike Weir shot a first round 78 and withdrew.

The second round is not complete as for some unknown reason one player, Alex Prugh, was unable to finish his round because of darkness. The PGA Tour web page indicates his ball is on the final green 48-feet from the hole. His two playing partners finished the final hole, but they were down the leaderboard and had no chance of making the cut. Prugh is tied for 26th and every stroke counts and it is supposed he decided to wait until in the morning to putt rather than run the risk of losing a stroke or two.

That situation is apparently delaying the pairings announcement until morning.
