Nyhus announced as UGA Women’s Senior Player of the Year!

The coach can still play!

Sue Nyhus has been a collegiate golf coach at BYU for 11 years and Utah Valley University for the last five years, and her game is still rock solid. When she took up coaching she kept her own clubs near at hand, but especially so this past year.

It was 30 years ago (1985) when Sue Billek won her first Women’s Utah State Amateur title and 15 years later (1999) she won the title for a second time under her married name, Sue Billek Nyhus. That year she also finished second in the USGA Women’s Public Links Championship and was selected as the UGA Player of the Year, the first time that a woman had been so honored with that title until Annie Thurman also captured the same award in 2002.

Now, another 15 years later, she added another Player of the Year honor to her trophy case, the 2014 UGA Women’s Senior Player of the Year Award.

Being able to stay close to the game through coaching has been helpful to her own game. Watching and motivating the good young players has pushed her to keep her game sharp, and of course, having her daughter on the team has provided extra incentive. Her daughter Kimberly showed steady improvement this year and became one of the best players on the Utah Valley University team.

Sue won the Senior Player of the Year award this year by finishing on top of the UGA Women’s Senior Player Performance Ranking. To do so she won the UGA Women’s Senior Am, the local qualifying of the USGA Women’s Senior Am, and won her first match at the USGA Senior Women’s Championship. This is the third year of the award. Annette Gaiotti won the award the two previous years.

This past month Nyhus and Gaiotti teamed up in the first USGA Women’s Four-Ball Championship and won a qualifying spot in the 2015 championship that will be played in May at Bandon Dunes.

Nyhus also has another distinction. She has played a big role for Utah in the Utah-Arizona Shootout and has scored more points than anyone who has ever played in the Shootout with the exception of Utah’s Steve Poulson.
