Zac Blair in Final Pairing at Fry’s.com Open
Just seven months ago Zac Blair won the UGA Winterchamps tournament and immediately announced that he was turning professional, and ‘flying out in the morning to play on a PGA Development Tour in Latin America.”
Life since then has been fast and furious, including qualifying for and making the cut in the U.S. Open, and tomorrow he tees it up in the lead group of the final round of the Fry’s.com Open in his first tournament as an official member the PGA Tour. It has been a seven month odyssey found only in fairy tales.
Blair earned 2015 PGA Tour exempt status through his good play on the Web.com Tour, and the Fry’s.com Open is the first event of the 2015 season.
Blair has been unflappable in posting rounds of 69-66-69-204 at the Silverado Country Club in Napa, California and only Zang-Moon Bae is ahead of him. Bae finished eagle, birdie and leads Blair by three shots. Also in that final pairing will be tour veteran Matt Kuchar who is only one behind Blair.
The tournament is being telecast live on the Golf Channel.
Blair was named UGA Player of the Year four times and won the Utah State Amateur championship in 2008 at Valley View. Two other Utah State Am champions, Daniel Summerhays and Tony Finau are also playing the Frys.com event and both made the cut.
Finau shot a 31 on the back nine Saturday and has posted 69-73-68-210, just six behind Blair and in 22nd place. Summerhays, who is the veteran of the Utah trio, stands at 71-72-72-215.
Finau, like Blair, earned PGA Tour status through his solid play all year on the Web.com Tour. He won the Utah State Am in 2006 by defeating Summerhays in the finals. Summerhays won two previous State Ams, in 2000 at Oakridge Country Club and in 2001 at Wasatch Mountain.
Just seven months ago Blair was Utah’s best amateur. Today Blair is teeing it in the final group of his first official PGA Tour event.
