Utah Defeats Arizona, 39-33, Widens Shootout Lead to 13-10-1

Utah retained the Utah-Arizona Shootout trophy for the fifth straight year by gaining a 39-33 victory over Arizona Tuesday morning at the Torreon Golf Club in Arizona. Utah came out of the four-ball and foursome segments with a slim one point lead, but widened the margin in the individual segment.
The victory gives Utah a 13-10-1 lead in the series, the biggest lead of either team in the 24 year history of the event. During the last five years Utah has won four times and tied the other time.  UGA Executive Director Bill Walker who joined team Utah in Show Low commented on the teams recent success “We are proud to be a part of such a great event and to team up with a tremendous partner with the Arizona Golf Association in the administration of the Utah-Arizona Shootout.  We are proud of our recent victories in this event and look forward to a hard fought battle with team Arizona next year”.
There were no specific stars for the Utah team as the points were spread out among everyone, but the Utah women once again dominated the Arizona women, earning ten of 12 points possible. The Utah women were former Women’s State Am champion Kelsey Chugg and Sadie Palmer. Chugg was Utah’s top scorer with 5.25 points.
Arizona’s seniors nearly offset the women’s deficit by outscoring the Utah seniors, 9-3.
Utah’s Kelsey Chugg and Jason Hargett were the only players on either team to sweep their individual match points. Sadie Palmer, Jeff Jolley, and Justin Keiley won their matches by 2 ½ to ½ margins.
The tournament returns to Utah next year and a site has not been announced.
