Blair Earns PGA Tour Card, Makes It Three State Am Champions on Next Year’s Tour
Utah golf is jumping for joy as Zac Blair, one of its most popular players, earned his PGA Tour card for next year by finishing second in the Web.com Championship Sunday at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Blair started the final tournament of the year with a first round leading 63 and finished with rounds of 65-71-68-267, just one shot behind Derek Fathauer.
Despite qualifying for the Web.com Tour late in the season, and missing the cut in the first three season ending championships, Blair made the most of his last chance. His opening round 63 was the best round of the tournament and his final round 68 came on the strength of a four under par back nine where the immense pressure didn’t seem to faze him.
Blair becomes the third Utah State Amateur champion to qualify for next year’s PGA Tour. Blair won the title in 2009 at Valley View and he will join former State Am champions Daniel Summerhays and Tony Finau on next year’s tour. Summerhays, who won the State Am twice, in 2000 and 2001, has just completed his fourth year on the tour. Tony Finau won the State Am in 2006 by defeating Daniel Summerhays in the finals at Soldier Hollow. Finau earned his PGA Tour Card earlier this year through his strong play in the regular season of the Web.com Tour. Finau finished 14th in the final event, shooting rounds of 68-72-70-66-276, nione shots behind Blair.
Blair leap-frogged over Finau and finished 11th in the final status ranking and Tony Finau finished 12th.
