Westminster Men’s, Women’s Golf Teams Win Tourney in Montana

BUTTE, Mont. – The Westminster men’s and women’s golf teams opened the Frontier Conference season by sweeping the team titles at the Montana Tech Invitational. This is the first time in school history that both teams won the same conference event.
After shooting 296 in each of the first two rounds, the Westminster men closed the tournament by shooting 281 in Tuesday’s final round to win by one stroke over Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). The women entered Tuesday tied with Lewis-Clark State, but the Griffins shot 313 in the final round and won by 20 strokes.
Cam Howe used a final-round 66 to complete a three-round total of 213 and shared medalist honors with Daniel Thompsett of Rocky Mountain (Mont.). The 66 was a career-best round for Howe and is tied for the lowest round in school history.
Nick Smart finished fourth overall with a score of 216 over the three rounds. Smart posted a final round of 70 after posting 71 strokes in the second round. Kalin Peterson placed 14th with 225 strokes with Tyler Hand and JP Harper each shooting 227 to tie for 18th.
Mari Hutsi took medalist honors on the women’s side with a two-round total of 147. The senior from Tallinn, Estonia, shot 71 on Monday and then closed by shooting 76 to win by six strokes. The win is the third conference title of her career.
Erin Tabish shot 81-76 to finish third overall with 157 strokes. Ashley Dechant tied for fifth by shooting 163 with Aubrey Kriss recording 178 strokes to tie for 15th. Alyssa Colby finished in the 24th position after shooting 194 in the two rounds.
