Fillmore Takes Lead into Final Round of UGA Mid-Am
It was a topsy-turvy 36-hole day at the UGA Mid-Am, Masters championship Thursday at Hobble Creek Golf Course and the stage has been set for an unpredictable final round Friday.
Former BYU star Robbie Fillmore is the 36-hole leader at seven under par and Hobble Creek’s Jason Hargett is just one shot behind. Fillmore’s rounds were pretty routine for him, a birdie here and there and scores of 68-67-135.
Hargett’s opening round was topsy-turvy in that he birdied 13, 14, and 15 and then gave them all back with a bogey on 16 and a triple bogey on 17, and made amends with a birdie on 18. In the afternoon round he went bogey free and carded four birdies and is just one shot behind Fillmore.
Jeff Jolley, thanks to an eagle on the par four 11th hole, is just two shots behind Fillmore. Those three have separated themselves from the rest of the field and will be paired together in the final round.
Part of the topsy-turvy nature of the day was furnished by rising star Kurt Owen who shot the best score of the first round, a 67 that included on eagle on par five ninth hole. He continued his steady play on the front nine of the second round, but things went south on him when he went bogey, bogey, double bogey, bogey on the 14th through the 17th holes. That three over par 74 put him six shots behind Fillmore going into the final round.
Dan Horner, a past Utah State Am champion, shot 71-69-140 and is still very much in the hunt.
