Zakhai Brown Takes First Round Lead in Siegfried-Jensen Utah Open

Former Colorado State golfer Zakhai Brown seems to like Riverside Country Club. His senior year at CSU he won the Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club and jumped to a first round lead in this year’s Siegfried and Jensen Utah Open with a bogey-free round of eight under par 64.
While he says, “the par fives at Riverside are vulnerable to the long hitters”  it was on the par threes where he gained his advantage on the rest of the field. He birdied the first three par three holes and only birdied two of the four par fives.
Former Utah Open champion Nathan Lashley, from Scottsdale, and Chase Barnes of Houston, are only one shot off the lead in the 54-hole tournament.
Daniel Engle, who just graduated from the University of Utah and is an apprentice pro at Mountain Dell, shot 66, the lowest score posted by a Utahn.
Three former BYU players and current Cougar Jordan Rodgers posted 68s. The former Cougars are Utah Open champion Clay Ogden, former PGA Tour regular Dean Wilson, and Steve Schneiter. Also in that group at 68 is former champion James Drew of Las Vegas.
Riverside Country Club’s assistant pro Chris Moody shot 69.
Defending champion Zach Johnson shot one under par 71.
