Nyhus Ekes Out Jones for UGA Women’s Senior Am Title
The final round of the UGA Women’s Senior Am at Crater Springs was a bit of a strange one for the usually steady Sue Nyhus. She won the championship, but not in her usual workmanlike style. She started with a comfortable three-stroke lead over Elizabeth Jones but double bogeyed the first hole and walked off that first hole with an unsteady one-shot lead.
She righted the ship quickly and birdied the second and third holes to regain her three shot advantage, and then on the sixth hole seemed to take complete control when she stretched the lead to four shots.
Nyhus parred the seventh, eighth, and ninth holes while Jones birdied seven and eight only to give them back with a double bogey on nine which left Nyhus four strokes ahead going onto the back nine.
With only two holes to play Nyhus still held a comfortable four shot margin, but as it turned out she needed every one of them. Nyhus double bogeyed the 17th and bogeyed the 18th and won the title by a slim one stroke.
