Garner Blows Away Field on Opening Day at Women’s State Am

Lea Garner made a strong opening round statement at the Women’s Utah State Amateur Wednesday at Ogden Country Club when she posted a 67 and completely blew away the rest of the field. She beat the field by six shots. Allison Cluff’s 73 was the next score on the leaderboard followed with a 74 by Sadie Palmer. Garner beat the projected cutline by 12 shots.
Garner’s round was bogey free and was highlighted by an eagle two on the 17th hole and a birdie on the 18th hole.
Sirene Blair, former All Stater from Bingham High and now a star of the golf team at San Diego State, is in a comfortable position with a 75.
Former two-time champion Sue Nyhus, now coaching at Utah Valley University, shot a 78. Her daughter Kimberly positioned herself well with a 75.
Two-time defending champion Kelsey Chugg is the automatic number one seed and while Garner appears to be a lock to advance to match play there are numerous others who will face a ‘white knuckle day’ in the second round of qualifying.
Based on the first round scores the cutline appears to be 158 give or take a couple of shots. The players currently resting on the cutline include former champion Julie McMullin, prominent senior player Annette Gaiotti, Haley Dunn, Justine Connell, Karen Killpack, and Tara Green. They each shot 79.
