Garner Edges Palmer for UGA Women’s Stroke Play Title

BYU junior Lea Garner survived a strong challenge from Southern Utah University’s Sadie Palmer Tuesday to win the UGA Women’s Stroke Play Championship at Hubbard Golf Course at Hill Air Force Base by one shot.
Garner was the mid-point co-leader with BYU teammate Kendra Dalton as they both shot opening rounds of 69 and Palmer was two strokes back with a 71.
Garner got off to a quick start in the second round with a birdie on the first two holes to widen the lead over Palmer to four shots. Palmer proceeded to birdie holes 3, 5 and 6 and Garner dropped a shot on 6 to have both players sitting at 4 under with 12 holes to play.     They both bogeyed two holes before making the turn giving a few others in the field hope that a comeback could be made in the final 9 holes.
Difficult, rainy conditions lead to a back 9 where pars were going to give these leaders a chance to win the title.  With both players still clinging to their -2 total, #17 proved to be the decisive hole with Garner making par and Palmer dropping a stroke with a tough bogey.  Both players finished up with pars on 18 giving Lea Garner the inaugural UGA Women’s Stroke Play title.
