Chugg, Nyhus Win Mary Lou Baker Titles, Scoreboard Doesn’t Tell Whole Story
You wouldn’t know it by looking at the final scores, but odd things happened in the final round of the Mary Lou Baker Open.
In the Championship Flight Kelsey Chugg shot an opening round 65 and seemed to have a lock on the championship, nine shots ahead of Rachel Newren-Harmon. As if to remove any doubt Chugg started the final round birdie-birdie-eagle and after 21 holes was 11 under par and Newren was 12 shots behind with just 15 holes to play. Turn out the lights! Right? Wrong!
At that point it was like a new dawning. Chugg didn’t get another birdie and instead chalked up four bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey and went eight over par and finished with a final round 77. Newren-Harmon shot 36 on the front and 36 on the back, but was in too big a hole to overtake Chugg’s 12 shot lead and Chugg won the title by four shots.
Odd things also happened in the final round of the Senior Division. Sue Nyhus went into the day with a seven shot lead over Annette Gaiotti and actually lost the lead because of Gaiotti’s good play and her own quadruple bogeys on the seventh and 16th holes. With two holes to play the two were tied. They both parred the 17th hole and on the final hole Gaiotti made a rare miscue of her day and double bogeyed. Nyhus bogeyed to earn the one stroke win.
