Broden Hughes Wins Sanpete County Open With ‘Twilight Zone’ Back Nine

Broden Hughes, a 26 year old amateur from Spanish Fork, shot nine under par on the first seven holes of the back nine to win the Sanpete County Open at Palisades Golf Course Saturday. He shot 26 on the back nine with three eagles, including a hole-in-one, and except for a final hole miscue he could have tied the remarkable score of 24 by Jeff Evans on the same nine last year. Hughes bogeyed the last hole after air-mailing his approach shot to the green.
Jordan Rogers, who played in the same group with Hughes, said, “After watching him make eagle on 12, and an ace on 14, I thought I was in the twilight zone when he made a 35-yard chip shot for another eagle on 16.”
Hughes had a 40 on the front nine, improved by 14 shots on the back nine with a 26 for an 18-hole tally of 66. That was two shots ahead of five professionals, Dustin Volk, Joe Summerhays, Jimmy Blair, Jeff Evans, and host pro Casey Fowles who all shared the winning purse.
Broden’s younger brother Brady, playing in the same foursome with his brother, shot 70.
