Parkinson Edges Teammate for Talons Cove Amateur Title

Joe Parkinson edged his BYU teammate Stephen Archibald by one shot to win the Talons Cove Amateur Saturday with a nine under par score of 68-67-135. Archibald led the field after the first day with an opening round of 66, but his two under par final round 70 wasn’t good enough to hold off the steady play of Parkinson.
The final pairing included Parkinson, Archibald, and Carey Shinkle and all three of them had the lead at various times on the back nine.
Parkinson’s experience played an important role in his victory. He made no mistakes coming down the wire.
Shinkle fell out of contention after posting a double-bogey on the par three 17th hole. He birdied the 18th, but that was moot at that point.
Rod Gust won the Senior Division by three shots with solid rounds of 70-70-140. Dave Fischer was the only other senior to finish under par for the two days. He shot 73-70-143.
The tournament played under ideal weather conditions and the course was in marvelous condition.
