‘White Knuckle’ Day Tomorrow at Utah Women’s State Am
Tuesday is ‘white knuckle’ day at the 107th Utah Women’s State Am at Wasatch Mountain State Park and a lot more attention is being placed on 15th place than first place because the low 15 will join defending champion Kelsey Chugg in the critical match play portion of the tournament.
Sirene Blair and Rynae Baca are the first round co-leaders with rounds of 70 on the Lake Course and Lea Garner is one stroke back at 71. Chugg, whose score doesn’t count, shot 72 and is the automatic number one seed when match play begins. Tara Green also shot 72 and the oldest player in the field, 60-year-old Annette Gaiotti shot 73.
Based on the scores repeating themselves in the second round it appears that it will take a two day total of 150 to advance to match play, give or take a stroke or two.
That means that former champions Julie McMullin and Sue Nyhus have to improve on their opening rounds in order to get to match play. McMullin shot 77 and Nyhus shot 78.
Match play begins on Wednesday, immediately following the Breakfast of Champions, and concludes on Thursday. All matches are 18 holes.
