Nyhus, Markle Win Berths in USGA Women’s Amateur

Sue Nyhus and Kareen Markle shot 76s and tied for medalist honors in the qualifying round for the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship Thursday at Jeremy Country Club. Two spots in the national championship were allotted to the Jeremy qualifying and so a playoff was not necessary. Marie Bambo was one shot back with a 77 and is the first alternate.There were only seven players in the competition. Others competing were Elizabeth Jones, Marie Needham, Kathy Friday, and Mareen Richardson.Nyhus is the women’s golf coach at Utah Valley University and has a long history of success as a player in Utah. She turned 50 this year and this was the first time she was eligible for the USGA Women’s Senior Tournament. Her biggest achievement was finishing second at the USGA Women’s Public Links Championship in 1999, and she has also played in the USGA Girls Junior, the Women’s Amateur, the Women’s Mid-Amateur, the U.S. Open, the five times on the Utah team in the USGA State Team competition. With this competition she will have played in every USGA national championship offered for women.The USGA Senior Women’s Amateur will take place in San Martin Calif., at the CordeValle Golf Course Sept. 21-26.
