Cole Ogden Hits Sensational Shot on 18th Hole to Advance to State Am Finals Against Jeff Evans
Cole Ogden was faced with a difficult decision when he stood on the ‘teaser’ 18th tee in his Utah State Am semifinal match with Jake Holt. Ogden had just gone one-up with about an eight-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and all he needed was a tie on the hole to win the match.
The tee on the par four hole was in its new ‘teaser’ position 300 yards from the hole, but required a carry of 275 yards to clear the creek running in front of the green.
What would you do? How would you play the hole? Would you play the safe tee shot, and take your chances with a wedge for a birdie or par? Or go for the gusto?
Ogden took out a 3-wood and let it fly. The ball sailed well over the creek, landed on the front apron of the green and settled about one-foot from the hole to cinch a 2-up victory and a spot in the championship match Saturday against Jeff Evans. It is surely one of the greatest and most timely shots in State Am history.
Jeff Evans defeated Dan Horner in a match that pitted the last two players to win the championship at Soldier Hollow. Evans won the title in 2011 and Horner won it in 2010, and Evans won the showdown of champions, 3 and 2.
Horner got two-up after five holes, but didn’t win a hole after that good start. Evans won the sixth through the ninth holes to get in a comfort zone and Horner was unable to cut into the margin.
The 36-hole championship match will begin at 7:30 Saturday morning. There will be a short break for lunch and the afternoon round will tee off around noon, but there is no set time.
Jake Holt, who plays at Southern Utah University, had a great tournament, knocking off Rafe Johnston, former runnerup Christian Jensen, Kelton Hirsch, and Connor Jones b efore pressing medalist Ogden to the final hole.
The championship match presents a bit of dilemma for the Ogden family as older brother Clay made the cut at the Utah Championship Web.com event being played at Willow Creek, but since the Utah State Am finale is Saturday and the Web.com final round is Sunday it will probably mean the family will be at Soldier Hollow.Jeff Evans reached the finals by defeating Colton Dallimore, 3 and 2; Clark Jones, 2 and 1; Joey Olson, 3 and 1; Joe Parkinson, 3 and 2; and Dan Horner, 3 and 2.Cole Ogden defeated Craig Wilson, 1-up; Jonathon Oettli, 2 and 1; Kai Ruiz, 5 and 4; Jeff Powars, 2 and 1; and Jake Holt, 2-up.Complete hole-by-hole match play results of all the matches are available on this web site by clicking the match play results button.
