Weir Off To Good Start; Blake Needs Strong Second Round
Mike Weir shot a 72 and Jay Don Blake shot 74 in the first round of the U.S. Open at Merion Country Club where par is 70. The course was inundated with rain and because of delays many players were unable to finish. Still Weir’s 72, if duplicated, is likely to make the cut, but Blake will probably need an improved second round to advance to the weekend.

ARDMORE, Pa. — Mike Weir wondered about his future.Thirty-five missed cuts in 43 starts over two-and-a-half years will do that, even to a major champion. That victory a decade ago must feel more like a lifetime ago for the Canadian, especially after he missed every one of his 14 cuts a year ago. Here at Merion Golf Club, however, the 43-year-old’s long road back from a slew of injuries — most recently a torn tendon in his left elbow — and swing woes continues.”My ball striking is getting much better,” Weir said. “I have strength in my arm again. I am feeling good. I’m feeling much better.”It showed in the opening round of the U.S. Open, where Weir was near the top of the leaderboard much of the morning before finishing with a 72.Four straight bogeys over Weir’s final six holes were souring, but a birdie on the ninth (his second-to-last hole of the day) softened things a bit.It also gave Weir promise, as did most of the rest of his round.”I feel like I still have quite a bit of good golf left in myself,” Weir said. “I was very determined to get back. I still love the game. I still love the practice. I enjoy the competition.”Thursday, he proved it.
Weir’s 72 gives him a good shot at making the cut, but Jay Don Blake shot a 74 and needs a better second round.
