Fifty-Foot Putts Make Difference in Cochran Topping Blake for Title
Fifty-foot putts made the difference in the Champions Tour Principal Charity Classic Sunday as Russ Cochran sank a 50-footer on the 16th hole and Jay Don Blake three-putted from 50-feet on the 17th hole which gave Cochran a one-stroke victory over Blake.
Midway through the final round, Blake appeared to be riding the momentum after making six birdies in a nine-hole stretch to briefly seize the lead from Cochran. However, Cochran birdied the par-5 13th hole from 12 feet to move back into a tie with Blake. Blake’s undoing down the stretch was his inability to birdie either of the par-5s on the back nine, missing a two-footer on the 13th hole and then failing to get up and down from the greenside bunker for birdie at No. 15.
Dan Forsman opened with a 69 and closed with a 69, but the 75 sandwiched in between dropped him to a tie for 21st.
The tournament was played at Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa.
