Blake Medalist at U.S. Open Qualifying, Weir First Alternate

Jay Don Blake was medalist at the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying Monday at Old Warsaw Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri. He shot 71-68-139 and beat the field by three strokes and thus becomes the only Champions Tour senior in the Open this year.

Blake has not played in a U.S. Open since 2003 at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y. Coming off a runner-up finish at the Principal Charity Classic in Des Moines, Iowa, Blake shot 71-68 at Old Warson for a 3-under 139 total that topped the field by two strokes.
“You get nervous,” Blake said about the qualifier. “You get tense. A lot of things go through your mind — negative things mostly.”
Roger Chapman, who was exempt for Merion by virtue of his 2012 U.S. Senior Open win, withdrew due to a shoulder injury.

Mike Weir won a first alternate spot by shooting 68-68-136 at Brookside Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. There were 120 players seeking 15 spots at the sectional.
Utahns attempting to qualify at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, California didn’t fare as well. Cole Ogden shot 69-70-139 and missed being an alternate by one shot. Other Utahns were Nick Killpack, 74-69-143; Tony Finau,73-72-145; Devin Daniels, 71-76-147); and Devon Purser, 79-71-150. There were 102 trying for five spots.
