Hansen-Royce Hang on to Win UGA Women’s Spring Opener in St. George
Terri Hansen and Sharon Royce shot an opening round 66 in the four-ball portion of the UGA Women’s Spring Opener at Bloomington Country Club Monday and built up a seven shot lead going into the final round Tuesday at Coral Canyon. It looked like Hansen and Royce had the title all wrapped up and that the second day scramble format was all about second place.
As the second round wore on and the weather got miserable and the hail came to the ground the scores also got closer and closer. In the scramble format Hansen and Royce were unable to gain much on par and settled for a final round 71, five shots higher than their four-ball score, and posted a combined score of 137. It was good enough to win by two shots, but they were one of only two teams in the championship flight that posted higher scramble scores than four-ball scores.
Annette Gaiotti and Nancy Anderson posted a scramble round score of 66 to go with their opening round score of 73 and a two-day total of 139, two shots shy of what they needed to overtake Hansen and Royce.
Despite the poor second day weather there were good scramble scores posted. In addition to the 66 posted by Gaiotti and Anderson there was a 66 shot by Amy Mayberry and Tora Rhodes, but their first day score was 77 and they finished in fifth place. Their margin of improvement between the first day and second day was 11 shots, the biggest improvement of the day.
Third place went to Jodi White and Joyce Billings with a four-ball score of 73 and a final round scramble of 67 for a 140. Jane Hughes and Brenda Blackham finished fourth with scores of 74-68-142.
