Cougars Continue Dominance of Collegiate Golf in Utah

Brigham Young University has been the dominating force in men’s collegiate golf in Utah for a half century and this year is no different. Bruce Brockbank enters his 22nd year as head coach. He took over the program when legendary coach Karl Tucker retired. Tucker established BYU as the dominate team in Utah and earned national prestige, including BYU’s first ever NCAA championship in any sport. Brockbank is a two-time Utah State Amateur champion and has maintained the program at a high level of excellence.
This year the Cougars are anchored by former Utah State Am champion Zac Blair who is already regarded as one of the top amateur players in the country. He is being considered for selection to the Walker Cup team. Joe Parkinson, another Utah State Amateur champion, could give the Cougars a big boost if he returns to top form after serving a mission for the past two years.
The Cougars got the season off to a good start by finishing third in the opening tournament of the season at the prestigious John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii.
A quick look at the other men’s collegiate teams in Utah is offered below. A roundup of women’s collegiate golf will be provided in a separate article.
Jeff Smith, the head coach at Weber State, is in his 21st year, and has consistently fielded strong teams, mostly consisting of Utah area golfers. He is assisted by Scott Earling.
Dean Johansen begins his 13th season as head coach of Utah State University. The Aggies haven’t had great success since the years of Jay Don Blake when he won the medalist honors at the NCAA championship.
Richard Church is entering his tenth year as head coach of the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds. He has no seniors on the team, but several promising underclassmen.
Randall McCracken is entering his ninth year as head coach of the University of Utah and the team is not expected to hold its own in the weathered advantaged PAC-10. Joe Webber and Brandon Kida are expected to be top performers for Utah.
Utah Valley University is coached by Chris Curran who is in his fourth season. The Wolverines will be counting on strong play in every tournament from senior Mason Casper.
The top collegiate tournament in Utah every year is the prestigious Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club. This year it is scheduled for April 26-27.
