Weir Makes Cut for First Time in 18 Months

(Written by Tod Leonard, San Diego U-T)
There are 34 Canadian golfers currently listed among the top 1,500 players in the World Golf Rankings. On that roster are Graham Delaet and Eugene Wong and Andrew Parr and Ryan Yip.Not among them: Mike Weir.It is almost unimaginable that a man who won the Masters nearly 10 years ago, spent 110 weeks in the world top 10, and still is only 42 years old could find himself in Weir’s current predicament. When Weir’s hot putter allowed him to start the Farmers Insurance Open on Thursday with a 6-under-par 66 on the Torrey Pines North Course – good enough to put him in a tie for third behind 7-under leaders Brandt Snedeker and K.J. Choi — it gave him hope that he could make his first cut in – ready for this? –18 months.Weir has not played on the weekend since July 2011 in the AT&T National. In the past two full seasons, he’s made only two cuts in 29 starts, and this year he began with a couple more misses, though it took a triple bogey on the final hole on Saturday to knock him out of playing the final round of the Humana Challenge last week.
