Mike Weir to Play in Seigfried-Jensen Utah Open

Aug.18, 2012:  Salt Lake City, Ut. – The Utah Section PGA office is pleased to announce that 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir has confirmed his entry in this year’s Siegfried and Jensen Utah Open Aug. 24-26 at Oakridge Country Club. Weir has won eight times on the PGA TOUR with his last win coming in 2007. Weir has also been inducted into the Utah Golf Hall of Fame. Weir will also play in the afternoon Pro Am tournament scheduled for Wednesday Aug 22nd at Oakridge CC.
Having a week off before the European Tour’s Omega European Masters in Switzerland, the Utah resident and former BYU golfer has added the Utah Open, a Utah golf tradition since 1926, to his tournament schedule. Weir is on the comeback trail, playing the European Tour, after requiring elbow surgery and losing his PGA TOUR card.
In 1999, Weir won his first PGA Tour title at the 1999 Air Canada Championship with a two-stroke victory over Fred Funk. In 2000, Weir became the first Canadian to play in the President’s Cup, where he led the international team with a 3-2-0 record. Mike made his fifth consecutive President’s Cup appearance in 2009. He was named to the President’s Cup team in 2003, 2005, and 2007, where he won the final match play round over Tiger Woods. Weir would go on to win four more tournaments on the PGA Tour before the defining moment of his career to date at the 2003 Masters where, in a playoff, he defeated Len Mattiace.
This year Weir is playing on the European Tour which fully exempts major winners for 12 years. Weir is two years into his recovery attempt from a torn tendon in his elbow.  He also is using sponsor invites and past champion status to play in selected PGA TOUR tournaments.
Utah Section PGA Executive Director Scott Whittaker said, “We are thrilled to have Mike playing in the Utah Open this year. We have a long and storied tradition of PGA TOUR professionals playing in the Utah Open. Some of the biggest golf names, not only in Utah but also nationally, have played and/or won the Utah Open, including George Schneiter, Bob Rosburg, Al Geiberger, Bob Betley, Mike Reid, Richard Zokol, Jay Don Blake, Bruce Summerhays and Billy Casper. We wish Mike all the best as he competes with a strong field this weekend.”
The 86th Siegfried and Jensen Utah Open tees off on Monday Aug. 20th with Media Day and Pro Am at Oakrigde Country Club. There are Pro Am tournaments scheduled throughout the week. The Utah Open championship will begin Friday morning. Weir will tee off on the number one hole at 8:50 a.m. The final round will be held Sunday, August 26th.  Admission to the week-long events and the Utah Open championship is free to golf fans of any age.
