Garner Ousts Blair in Classic Match of Prepsters in Quarterfinals of Women’s Utah State Am

When we look back on this year’s Women’s Utah State Amateur it could well be said that the championship match occurred in the quarterfinals of match play when the state’s two top prepsters, Lea Garner, the Class 4A champion, and Sirene Blair, the Class 5A champion, faced each other in a classic match at the Logan Golf and Country Club.

Blair won the 15th hole to take a two-up lead over Garner, which was the largest lead of the day for either one. With only three holes to play Garner had her back to the wall. She parred the 16th hole to cut the lead to one hole, halved the 17th hole, and then won the 18th hole to send the match into sudden death. Garner then birdied the first playoff hole to win the match and advance to the semifinals.

During the first 11 holes of the match they each won only one hole, and during the last eight holes of the match only one hole was not won.

The second round also saw the elimination of defending champion Julie McMullin by Tara Green. Green birdied the second, fifth, and seventh holes and jumped to a huge five hole lead on the first seven holes. McMullin won ten and 11 to cut it to three, but those were the only holes she won and Green closed out, 4 and 3.

Other quarterfinal winners were Naomi Soifua, 3 and 2 over Sadie Palmer; and Kelsey Chugg with a 7 and 5 victory over Kirsten Fotu.
The semifinals will be Friday morning with Garner facing Soifua and Green facing Chugg. The matches begin at 9:30 a.m. The finals will be played in the afternoon.
