Champion, Medalist Win First Round Matches at Women’s Utah State Am

The first and second seeds advanced easily in the first round of match play at the Women’s Utah State Amateur being held at Logan Golf and Country Club.

Defending champion Julie McMullin won the first three holes against Courtney Smith and went on to win 6 and 5.

Medalist Lea Garner got three up after four holes and then went on to win her match against Hannah Herman, 4 and 3.

The biggest margin of victory in the first round was Kelsey Chugg claiming a 7 and 5 win over Jordyn Dougal. Chugg didn’t lose a hole in the match.

Tara Green won the first two holes and then eliminated Brooke Bliss, 5 and 4. Sadie Palmer also won by a 5 and 4 margin over Jamie Millard, winning the 11th, 12th, 14th, and 15th holes.

Sirene Blair and Amanda Keith had a very close match. Keith won the first hole and then they halved nine straight holes before Blair squared the match on the 11th hole. Blair took the lead by winning the 15th hole and Keith was unable to catch her. The unusual match saw Keith win the first hole and didn’t win another one, but never trailed by more than one.

Naomi Soifua and Allison Cluff also had a close match in which neither player ever led by more than one hole and Soifua led by one when it counted the most.

Kirsten Fotu also won her match over Annika Afoa on the very last hole, 1-up.
