Borich Wins Terry Malan Senior Open; Fairbanks Tops Amateurs

With three holes to go in the Terry Malan Utah Senior Open Mike Borich was four-up on the field with four holes to play and it looked like the contenders were battling for second place, but Borich double bogeyed the 16th hole and that changed the complexion of the scoreboard.

Borich charitably bogeyed the 18th hole, but at that point the bogey was all he needed. Dave DeSantis, Stu Nelson, and Jimmy Blair each came up one stroke short and Borich claimed the title for the third time.

Stu Nelson shot a 32 on the front but gave it all back when he double bogeyed the tenth and 11th holes. He had to birdie the last hole to finish in a tie for second.

Tom Rogers won the Super Senior Pro Division easily with a 143, seven shots better than his nearest foes.

Scott Fairbanks edged Jeff Powars for the senior amateur championship by one shot. Fairbanks shot an opening round 69 and slid to a 74 the second day. Powars had a 73 the first day and shot 71 the final round. Rob Bachman and Bill Probst finished third.

In the Amateur Super Senior Division Dave Fischer edged Al Simkins by one shot. Fischer shot 70-74-144 while Simkins carded 71-74-145. Fischer took a two stroke lead on the 15th hole when Simkins bogeyed. Simkins got it back to one with a birdie on 17, but Fischer held on for the win on the final hole.
