Rasmussen, Banz Qualify for USGA National Junior Championship

Draper’s Rhett Rasmussen claimed medalist honors at this week’s Utah regional qualifying for the 65th United States Junior Amateur Championship to be held at the Golf Club of New England at Stratham, New Hampshire July 16-21. A playoff for the second qualifying spot was earned by Austin Banz on the third hole of the sudden-death playoff. Banz qualified for last year’s championship which was held at the Gold Course in Bremerton, Wa. and so it will be his second straight national championship.
Rasmussen and Banz have also each qualified for the Utah State Amateur and sadly, the two tournaments are being held at the same time. They will have to make a choice, but it is expected that they will choose to play in the USGA National Junior Championship.
Rasmussen won the qualifying by shootig an opening round of 70 (-2) at Wasatch Mtn. Golf Course and a final round of 69 (-3) at the Park City Golf Club. Rasmussen’s 139 total (-5) was four shots better than runner-up’s Austin Banz (71-72: 143) of Salt Lake and Alex Herzog (66-77: 143) of Ogden. The win is Rasmussen second championship of the summer and two of the last three events he has played in.
