Probst, Murphy Square Off in UGA Senior Match Play Finale
It will be Bill Probst facing Patrick Murphy for the championship of the UGA Senior Match Play tournament Friday morning at Valley View Golf Course. They each posted comfortable semifinal victories with Probst defeating Paul Cannon, 4 and 3, and Murphy eliminating Karl Avant, 3 and 2. The final match will pit two of Utah’s top senior players.
Probst is the leader in the UGA Senior Player Performance Rankings (SPPR) and was also medalist in the qualifying round at Valley View, but Murphy has had considerable success in the senior program and came from behind to edge Probst for the UGA Senior Amateur several years ago at The Homestead, one of the few senior tournaments that Probst has not won.
Probst won the UGA Match Play once before, has won Winterchamps twice, and was the UGA Player of the Year two years ago.
“Considering our tournaments and the eight-man team leagues Murph and I have played each other many times and I would guess it’s probably about 50-50. We’re certainly not new to each other,” Probst said.
In the Super Senior Division (65 and over) medalist Al Simkins survived his first serious challenge in match play by defeating Heber Jacobsen, 2 and 1, and will face surprise finalist David Fischer who knocked off Brent Tidwell in the other semifinal match, 1-up.
In the Net Division the finalists are Paul Auxier and Bret Hancock. Auxier edged Al Krahunbuhl in a match that went one extra hole, and Hancock won his semifinal match over Gus Stribakos, 4 and 3.
