Moody, Stone, Johnson, Volk Reach Semis of Utah PGA Match Play Championship
The Utah Section PGA Match Play Championship that started with 32 qualifiers is now down to just four. The semifinals and finals will be held Wednesday at Hubbard Golf Course at Hill Air Force Base with Chris Moody facing Pete Stone in one semifinal and Zach Johnson squaring off with Dustin Volk in the other semifinal.
Moody advanced to the semis with a 4 and 3 win over last year’s champion Troy Watkins and then had to face his friend and fellow assistant professional at Riverside Country Club, Matt Baird. The two didn’t want to defeat or lose to one another and after 21 holes Moody finally won.
In the other bracket Zach Johnson coasted to 6 and 4 victories over Cody Pughe, the new head pro at Toana Vista, and then ousted Todd Tanner by the same margin.
Dustin Volk, who grew up on the Hubbard course where his dad was the head professional, defeated Dave Loughton, 5 and 4, and then edged Mark Owen, 1-up.
