Thunderbirds Lose Summit Conference Golf Title in Playoff

Southern Utah University came from ten shots back in the final round to force a playoff for the Summit League Championship, but then lost in the playoff by one shot. It was the second straight year that the Thunderbirds have finished second in the conference championship. The tournament was held this past weekend at Primm Valley golf course near the Nevada border.
Jake Holt topped the Thunderbirds with rounds of 72-68-71-211 and finished in fourth place. Utah State Am champion Jeff Evans was two back of Holt with rounds of 66-75-72-213. Nic Booth was another three shots back at 216 with a final rouond 68 that boosted the Thunderbirds into the playoff. His first two rounds were 70-78. Brad Millard and Sammy Cole finished at 217 with rounds of 70-72-75, but they came on different days.
IUPUI won the title and had two performers who proved to be the class of the field. Michael Davan was medalist at the tournament with rounds of 64-71-70-205 and Ben Engle shot an amazing 62 in the opening round finished 2ith 70-75 for a 207.
On the distaff side of the league the SUU women golfers finished in fourth place, just 11 shots out of first place. Monica Jung led the Thunderbirds with a five over par finish for the three round total. Others on the team were Kaohi Loo, Brittany Edwards, Kacy Buckner, and Jamie Millard. Oral Roberts won the title by four shots over North Dakota State.
The Southern Utah University team will play in the Cougar Classic this weekend at Riverside Country Club. The Thunderbirds are coached by Richard Church.
