Jurca Makes His Mark, Wins Fox Hollow Amateur By Six Shots
by Randy Dodson
BYU red-shirt freshman Mike Jurca ran away from the field to capture first place at the Fox Hollow Amateur.
Jurca shot 67-70 – 137 (-7), six shots better than UVU’s Mason Casper’s 68-75 – 143.
Casper was just one shot of the lead to start the second round but couldn’t catch Jurca even though he played in the afternoon flight and had slightly better weather. The weather threw a little bit of everything including rain, wind and hail at Jurca but he got the best of Mother Nature and the Fox Hollow field.
“I just kept telling myself to remain patient and keep focused,” explained Jurca. “I really got the best out of my game at the 10th hole with an eagle in the first round and a birdie today. The greens are really, really good out there and I put my ball in the right position to score. I am really happy with the way I played.”
Jurca last made his mark on the Utah golf scene a little over two years ago when he won the Utah 4A High School State Championship at Soldier Hollow.
“That tournament was my last win and it also was in some pretty bad weather. I guess I do all right in bad weather.”
Jurca’s BYU teammates are in California preparing for their Conference Championship. Jurca didn’t qualify for the tournament but made the most of staying behind and entering the Fox Hollow Amateur. He says his plans are to play in everything he can leading up to the Utah State Amateur this summer.
Fox Hollow Head Professional Rick Roberts said the tournament field was down this year but attributed the decrease in players due to the bad weather. Utah County was drenched for most of the 36-hole tournament with cold wind, hail, snow and rain.
“The golf course is in really good shape since we had such a dry winter. In fact our greens are really good. Our rounds are up to start the year and the golf course is in good condition. We are excited about what’s happening here at Fox Hollow.”
