Check out what has been happening in Utah Golf.

It’s Time To Head South for Winter Golf

It’s the time of year when Utah golfers look southward and the golf offerings are getting better and better both in quality and price.

There are now 19 public golf courses and two country clubs in the St. George-Mesquite vicinity, and several of them are among the best in the state in the important categories of design and conditioning. We won’t make a ranking list because golfers will surely do that on their own and from their own perspective. Every time someone tees it up they’ve made a choice as to where they want to play that particular day.

St. George Area

There are six munis in the St. George area with St. George City providing Sunbrook, St. George Golf Club, Southgate, and Dixie Red Hills. Dixie Red Hills is a popular nine-hole track and Sunbrook offers 27-holes. Southgate suffered some major flooding damage recently, but repair work has been completed and the course is open for play this winter on all 18 holes.

Washington City owns and manages Green Spring, and Hurricane owns Sky Mountain, but is leasing management to Vanguard Golf.

The two country clubs in the area are Entrada and Bloomington. Entrada is more exclusive while Bloomington offers limited play to non-members on occasion.

Privately owned courses are Sand Hollow, Kokopelli, and Coral Canyon on the east side of St. George, and Valderra at the Ledges and Sun River on the west side. All are open to the public.

Sand Hollow and Coral Canyon are upscale, well conditioned courses. Sand Hollow is in the process of completing its long awaited clubhouse. It is a 27-hole facility and three of the holes on the back nine overlooking the Virgin River are among the most scenic holes in the world.

Mesquite Area

Mesquite is the gaming suburb of St. George and until this recent recession had enjoyed steady growth by introducing golf as a supplemental attraction for its casinos.

The first golf course in the area was the Palms. Then came the Oasis with 36 holes, followed closely by Casablanca, Wolf Creek, Falcon Ridge, and recently Conestoga. Further on down the highway is Coyote Springs Golf Club. All of the courses in the Mesquite area are privately owned, open to the public.
