Saratoga Springs • At last week’s Region 3 golf tournament, Alta’s Kenny You lost in a playoff and his coach, Rick Dittman, pulled aside the Utah State-bound senior and said, “That’s the small trophy. Let’s go for the big one next week.”
Thursday at the 5A state tournament, both You and the Alta team won the “big ones” at Talons Cove Golf Club.
The Hawks won the team championship by 25 strokes, while You shot a 5-under 67 Thursday, the best score of the two-day tournament, to run away with the individual title. Over two days, he shot a combined 139.
“It means so much,” You said. “High school is only four years and to win state during those four years has always been a goal of mine.”
Alta won its first state title since 2003, as its four top players — You, Nate Lant, Tanner Howard and Andrew Ovard — all shot under 80 Friday. The Hawks shot a combined 616 for both days. Last year’s champions, the Lone Peak Knights, finished second with 641.
You entered the day tied for the lead and was grouped with Brighton’s Charlie Duering, who beat You in the Region 3 playoff, and hard-hitting Syracuse senior Colton Dallimore, who entered the day two strokes back of You and finished second with a 142 after a second-round 68.
Granger’s Henry Leng finished third, one stroke behind Dallimore after shooting a 69 Thursday.
“I was just making birdies and [You] played solid the whole time,” Dallimore said. “Like a little machine out there.”
With Dallimore chasing him all day, You stayed out front with six birdies, including an emphatic 20-footer on the 18th green, demonstrating to observers how he had played throughout the tournament.
“Wasn’t that a heck of a putt right there?” Dittman said. “Talk about sinking a 20-footer like that, and in front of a crowd.”
In rain and wind Wednesday, You shot a first-round 72 and shared the lead with Northridge’s Kyler Dearden. Dearden, who teed off two hours before You, fell off Thursday with a 75 to finish fifth, even though the weather was significantly improved.
It never rained on the golfers as rain and snow stayed in the mountains and north toward Salt Lake City.
