STERLING — A strong afternoon wind had Beaver High golf coach Mark Yardley concerned as his team finished play Tuesday afternoon.
“We’ve played OK,” he said. “But the wind has cost our team nine shots on (No.) 16.”
Yardley needn’t have worried; the wind had everyone else several strokes off their first-day pace, too, with the best score of the day a pair of 76s, posted by Mason Powell of Gunnison and Zak Hazlett from Grand.
The Beavers earned their second straight 2A state championship with a two-day score of 629, 34 strokes better than second-place Grand. Dallon Murdock had a 77, Taylor Yardley scored a 78, Hunter Hansen finished at 81 and Braxton Williams came in at 83 for a two-day team total of 319.
Coach Yardley attributes the success of his team to their depth.
“We’ve always used scores from different players,” he said. “They’re a good group of boys that work hard. There’s not a team that’s better prepared.”
Murdock is one of five team members that played on last year’s championship squad. He believes coach Yardley’s work ethic makes the team better.
“He’s the Mayor, so he’s really busy,” said Murdock.”He doesn’t miss practices, he’s there every day. I think he puts more work in with us than he does for himself.”
During the award presentation, it was suggested that Beaver is so good because the Beavers practice on a course that has greens half the size of those found on most courses.
“I wish that were true,” said Yardley. “We’d win every year.”
That statement may be prophetic since there isn’t a senior on the team. The same players will be back next year looking for a three-peat.
