SPRINGVILLE — All season long, the Woods Cross and Highland golf teams have done battle in Region 6, usually finishing within five strokes of each other every week. After seven meets this season and more than four thousand strokes played, the Wildcats ended up a mere two strokes ahead of the Rams.
So it was no surprise that after the first day of the Boys 4A state golf tournament that the Wildcats and Rams are battling it out once again at the top of the leaderboard at Hobble Creek Golf Course.
Led by Peyton Hastings’ 4-under-par 67, the Wildcats shot a 297 score Monday, two shots better than Highland’s 299 total. Unless they totally fall apart, one of those schools is likely to be crowned as the state champion after Tuesday’s second round.
Timpview and Maple Mountain are tied for third place at 310, while Orem is another shot back at 311. Region 5 champion Roy is next at 314, followed by East at 315 and Murray at 318.
“We had some first-day jitters, but we played OK,” said Woods Cross coach James Sheldon. “It definitely helps to have someone like Peyton. He makes a big difference.”
Hastings didn’t have a bogey in posting his 4-under score that also gave him the individual lead over Hillcrest’s Seokwon Jeon, who shot a 68. Two players, Skyline’s Travis Norseth and Bonneville’s Nick Smith, each shot 71.
The Wildcats also got 76s from Spencer Hale and Jordan Warnock and 78s from Payton Halls and Kyle Beard.
Highland coach Paul Tate is hoping his team can come back and return the favor to the Wildcats, who came from five shots back in the final meet to edge the Rams for the Region 6 title, 2096 to 2098 in the seven meets. “I’m proud of my team today,” Tate said.
All season, the Rams have relied on their superior depth and they did it again Monday with all six players shooting under 82 and the four counting scores all under 77.
Sophomore Matt Loosle led the way with a 72, while the three Ram seniors, Mitch Creer, Devin Tovey and Andrew Sorensen shot 74, 76 and 77, respectively.
