Horner Wins First Match in Sudden Death at USGA Mid-Am

Dan Horner birdied the first hole of a sudden death playoff to win his first round match at the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship Monday. He defeated Terence Begnal of Oklahoma City and will face Mike Stamberger of Plainfield, New Jersey in the second round.
 
Horner shot 148 in the qualifying rounds and was the 52nd seed, making the cut with just one shot to spare. Begnal was the 13th seed.
 
Jeff Jolley, who shot a qualifying score of 149, was among 20 golfers to playoff for the final three match play spots, but was eliminated in the playoff. the other 2 Utahn’s missing the cut were Darrin Overson, who shot 152 and Shane Brady who shot 156.
