Poulson Wins in Round of 32, but loses in Round of 16 at USGA Senior Am

Utah’s top senior player, Steve Poulson, won his second round match at the USGA Senior Amateur over former champion Mike Rice, 3 and 2, but lost in the round of 16 to Louis Lee of Heber Springs, Arkansas, 5 and 4. Lee thus advances to the quarterfinals against his brother Stanford Lee, also of Heber Springs. Stanford Lee won the Senior Am title in 2007 and Mike Rice won it in 2005. Had Poulson survived the match with Louis Lee he would have faced two former champions back-to-back, and also would have played both Lee brothers back-to-back, but that little quirk didn’t happen.

Poulson was two down after ten holes in his match with Rice, but he then won 11, 12, and 13 to go one up, halved 14, and then closed him out with wins on 15 and 16 to win by a 3 and 2 score.

Poulson started his match with Lee by winning the first hole with a birdie, but that was his last moment of glory in this tournament. Lee birdied the fourth hole to square it and then won 5, 7, 8, and 9 to turn with a 4-up lead. He closed the match by winning the 15th hole to win 5, and 4.
