Blair Wins Pacific Coast Amateur Match Play Championship

MATCH PLAY TREE
Bend, Ore. (July 16, 2011) — Zac Blair of Ogden, Utah capped off a great week with a 5 & 4 victory over Tyler Raber of El Macero, Calif. in the 36-hole championship title match of the 110th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Tetherow Golf Club in Bend, Ore.

The PNGA Amateur Championship began with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying followed by a cut to the low 64 players who advanced to single elimination match play.   Blair only trailed in the match for the first two holes of the 36-hole finals, losing the first hole when he left his approach shot in the bunker and was unable to get it out on the first attempt resulting in a bogey.   The match returned to all-square after Blair made par on the par-3 3rd hole.  The next five holes were halved and then Blair made his move.  A winning par on the 9th hole and a 12-foot curling birdie putt on the 10th hole gave him a 2-up advantage and he never looked back.Another great up-and-down birdie from the deep greenside bunker on the shortened par-4 15th hole gave him a short-lived 3-up lead.  Raber answered with a birdie win on the 17th hole, but Blair won the final two holes of the morning 18 with pars to take a commanding 4-up advantage.  In the afternoon, with two more birdies, Blair won 4 of the opening 6 holes to extend his lead to a nearly insurmountable 8-up lead with just 12 holes remaining. Raber had one last flurry in him and he battled back with wins on the 26th thru 28th holes of the match to close the lead to 5, but a missed short birdie try on the 30th hole proved costly. A halve on the next hole left Blair dormie. On the final hole, Blair hit his tee shot on Tetherow’s 190-yard par-3 14th hole to 15-feet, well inside of Raber’s who was twice the distance away. Raber missed a needed birdie putt if there was any hope to extend the match, but Blair easily 2-putted for a 5 & 4 victory.Blair has played 13 championship rounds of golf over the last 9 days and has no plans of resting. After finishing runner-up last week at the Sahalee Players Championship and Champion this week; a 6:30 a.m. flight on Sunday morning will take Blair to the Colorado Open and from there he makes his way to the 45th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship in California the following week where he again will meet up with Raber.
