Craig Woodward Wins UGA Senior Amateur; Offers New Maxim “Take a Break!”

Craig Woodward, the surprise winner of the UGA Senior Amateur, has some advice to other would be champions, “Take a break!” “So much for practice makes perfect!” Go Figure!
Woodward, on a work assignment for the past two weeks in Hamburg, Germany, flew back into town the night before the UGA Senior Amateur at Park City Golf Course, having not touched a club for two weeks. He was feeling rusty and tired and wasn’t expecting much, but also having forgotten all his bad habits he promptly went out and shot an even par opening round and then on the second day started by chipping in for eagle on the first hole and played even par the rest of the way for a two under par total 142 and a three-shot margin of victory over Steve Poulson and Craig Gardner.
It’s his biggest win as a senior and one of the biggest wins in his life. He has been a very good amateur golfer for many years, and has many wins under his belt, but not one quite like this.
Woodward made the Utah Shootout team back in 2002 when he held down the number two ranking on the UGA Player Performance Rankings. That was his best year, and included winning the Cache Valley Open, but this UGA Senior Amateur victory is his first ever UGA tournament victory.
Bill Johnston won the 55-59 age division with a 147 score, and Mike Hacker and Bob Feilner shared the 60-64 age title with 155s.
Heber Jacobsen won the 65-69 division with a 154. Peter Leth took 70-72 honors with a 163 score, and Dick Peacock easily won the 75 and over title with a 161 score.
The tournament went without anyone shooting their age.
The Park City course proved very difficult to manage with Woodward the only player to finish under par for the two days.
