Murphy Has Tough Job Defending UGA Senior Amateur Title

Utah’s top senior golfers gather Thursday and Friday at the Park City Golf Course to battle for the UGA Senior Amateur championship.

Defending champion is Patrick Murphy who won it last year at The Homestead., but he will face a host of tough competition beginning with Al Simkins, the current leader of the UGA Senior Player Performance Rankings with 119 points. Following Simkins in the SPPR rankings are Steve Poulson, Bill Probst, and Todd Barker, all of whom played last week in the Utah State Amateur. Probst qualified for match play, but lost his first match to Travis Norseth. Poulson was in a playoff for the final match play spots and won the UGA Senior Match Play title earlier this year. Murphy currently ranks 12th on the SPPR standings and hasn’t had a win on the SPPR schedule yet this year.

The top two players in the Senior PPR who are over 55 will earn the two senior spots on the Utah Shootout team. Right now that would be Simkins and Poulson. Poulson turns 55 prior to the Shootout which will be held in late September at Victory Ranch. The winner earns 60 SPPR points and if any of the top three win it would go a long ways to assuring them a spot on the team.

There are 108 entries in the UGA Senior Am and several age divisions in both gross and net.
