Collegians Jeff Evans, Stratton Schulz Square Off in Utah State Am Finale

Stratton Schulz, who hasn’t seen the last two holes of the Soldier Hollow Gold Course since match play began, and Jeff Evans, who took 21 holes to win both his quarterfinal and semifinal matches, will meet in the championship match of the 113th Utah State Amateur Championship Sunday at Soldier Hollow on the Gold Course.

Evans hails from Cedar City and has played collegiate golf at Southern Utah University and Schulz hails from Vernal and plays college golf at Utah Valley University.

Schulz, the 31st seed by virtue of making a birdie in the 16-man playoff for the final match play spots, has defeated Weber’s Casey Halliday, 3 and 2; HAFB’s Tommy Wingert, 4 and 2; BYU’s Cameron Edens, 3 and 2; and Jeremy champion Greg Wojtkun, 6 and 5.

Evans, the eighth seed, defeated David Madsen, 6 and 4; former runnerup Scott Clark, 1-up; the number one seed John Busby, in 21 holes; and Conner Jones, in 21 holes.

Evans, in his quarterfinal match against number one seed John Busby was two down with two to play, but birdied the 17th to cut it to one. On the 18th he hit two great shots and had a short birdie putt that was conceded when Busby had trouble in the sand. It took them three more holes before Evans clinched the grueling match with a birdie.

Evans also found himself in trouble in his semifinal match with Conner Jones who had taken a 2-up lead by running in three straight birdies on 13, 14, and 15. However, the never-say-die Evans birdied the 16th and 18th holes to send it into sudden death, where once again it concluded with an Evans birdie on the 21st hole.

Since it is a 36-hole final match Schulz is going to have to play the 17th and 18th holes in the morning round and he can know for certain that a lead against Evans isn’t very meaningful.

On the other hand, the goal for Evans is to at least make Schulz play the last two holes in the afternoon round.

The morning round begins at 7:30. There will be a brief intermission and the afternoon round is expected to begin at 11:30.
