Ogden Tops Tight Leaderboard Going Into Final Provo Open Round
Clay Ogden takes the Lead at the Provo Open
For Clay Ogden, ranking tournament wins comes fast and easy. There is, of course, the USGA Public Links Championship, then comes the Utah Open and Nevada Open for their sizable winner’s checks. There are a few Harmon Tour wins and the San Juan Open championship.
When asked about the Provo Open, Ogden said, “I would really love to win the Provo Open. I want to win every local tournament I play in. I’ve come close to winning it a couple of times. Having played for four years at BYU in Provo I’ve had my chances. This is one I’d like to get.”
Talking about winning a tournament may be a little presumptuous especially when you’re holding a slim one stroke lead but with a second round score of 62 there is a lot to be excited about.
Ogden’s 10 under round was fueled by a seven under, 29 on his opening nine (the back nine) at the Reserve at East Bay. He carded five birdies and an eagle and then he birdied his 10th, 12th and 14th holes on the round to get it to 62. The competitive course record at the par 72 course is 61.
“I knew I was playing really well but I wasn’t adding it up. I just wanted to keep making birdies, explained Ogden. “Holes six through nine can play pretty tough. The greens are firm and they can tuck those flags so I was happy to par out.”
Ogden’s two day total of 132 (-12) is one better than first round leader Nick Killpack (133) and two better than Casey Fowles at 134. The low amateur of the tournament after 36-holes is Clay Bingham at four under, 140.
The 36-hole cut came at 151 for the professionals and 152 for the amateurs. The championship round of the 72nd Provo Open will begin Saturday morning at 7:20. The leaders Ogden, Killpack and Fowles will tee off at noon.
