2008 UGA Mid Amateur/Masters Championship

54-Hole Stroke Play

Rules and Regualtions

Basis of Play- The 2008 UGA Mid-Amateur and Masters Championships will be conducted by stroke play over 54 holes. All play is gross only. USGA Rules, UGA Local Rules, UGA Conditions of the Competition, and UGA Local Rules Addendum will govern play.

Eligibility- Those participating in the Mid Am must be 25 years of age or older as of August 22nd. Those participating in the Masters must be 40 years of age or older as of August 22nd. Entrants in the Masters are automatic entrants in the Mid Am as well. The two tournaments will run concurrently. All participants must be paid members of the UGA

Handicap and Entry Restrictions- Participation is restricted to those with single digit handicap indexes.

Site, Pairings and Times- All rounds will be played at TalonsCove GC, Hobble Creek GC, and Alpine CC. There will be a cut after two rounds to the low 50 and ties. The final round will be played on Friday, August 15th. Pairings for the final round will be based on order of score and will begin at 7:30 a.m. First round pairings will be determined by the UGA committee and will be posted on the UGA website, www.uga.org. Players may also call the UGA office, (801) 563-0400. Players are responsible to know their own times.

Playoffs- In case of a tie for the championship in either tournament there will be a sudden death playoff to determine the winner.

Exemptions- The Mid Am champion earns a spot on the UGA team to play against Arizona. The top three finishers will also earn an exemption into the 2008 Utah State Amateur Championship. If necessary, a playoff will determine those exemptions. The Masters champion also earns an exemption in the 2008 State Am.

Entry Fee- The entry fee is $XXX. Fee includes green fees and carts for the entire tournament, and lunch at the half-way house on Wednesday. Field is limited to the first 112 paid players. There is a $5 credit card processing fee.

Cut- There will be a cut after two rounds to include the low 50 players and ties and anyone within ten shots of the leader in their respective divisions.

Withdrawals and Refunds- If for any reason you must withdraw please notify the UGA office at least 48 hours prior to starting time. If notified prior to 48 hours of starting time a refund will be granted less a $10 handling fee.

Conduct- All players will be expected to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike and courteous manner. Inappropriate conduct may result in disqualification.

Dress Code- Shorts are permissible, but they need to be proper golf attire at least mid-thigh in length. Cargo shorts and pants are not permitted. Denims, levis, cutoffs, gym shorts, etc. are not permitted. A collared shirt is required.

Cellular Phones- Cellular phones are not permitted to be active during play of a round. Use of cell phone during tournament may result in disqualification.

Golf Shoes- Golf shoes must be spikeless.

UGA Local Rules and Conditions of Competition
Play is governed by the USGA Rules of Golf and by the following Local Rules and definitions where applicable. Any changes and additions to these Local Rules will be provided on a Local Rules Addendum.
Unless otherwise stated, penalty for breach of a Local Rule is two strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play. Any questions should be resolved before the scorecard is signed and turned in.
Disregard any local rules printed on the course scorecard.
1- Golf Balls: Only golf balls that have been tested and are on the current list of USGA Conforming Golf Balls may be used. Penalty- Disqualification.
2- Pace of Play: Group Pace of Play Policy will be applied. Click here for more information on this policy.
3- Embedded Ball: Anywhere 'through the green', a ball that is embedded in its own pitch mark, except in loose sand, may be lifted without penalty, cleaned and dropped as nearly as possible to the spot where it lay, but not nearer the hole.
4- Out of Bounds: Defined by the nearest inside points of white stakes, fence posts, masonry walls, and/or white lines at ground level. When out of bounds is fixed by a white line on the ground, the line itself is out of bounds. All public roads are deemed out of bounds and if not otherwise marked the nearest edge of the asphalt, concrete, or curbing shall be the boundary. If a ball crosses a public road and comes to rest on another part of the course it is deemed out of bounds.
5- Ground Under Repair: Areas enclosed with white lines. French drains are also ground under repair.
6- Water Hazards: Defined by yellow lines and/or yellow stakes. Stakes identify, lines define.
7- Lateral Water Hazards: Defined by red lines and/or red stakes. Stakes identify, lines define.
8- White lines tied into obstructions are part of that obstruction.
9- Permanent elevated power lines and cables: If a ball strikes such a line or cable, the stroke shall be cancelled and must be replayed without penalty.
10- Late to tee: If a player arrives at the starting tee within 5 minutes after the assigned starting time, the penalty is loss of the first hole in match play, or two strokes at the first hole in stroke play. Later than 5 minutes is disqualification.
11- Suspension of play for a dangerous situation: As per rule 6-8 and Appendix 1-4. All practice areas are closed during a suspension for a dangerous situation. Suspensions for a dangerous situation shall be signaled by one long air horn blast. Other types of suspensions shall be signaled by several short blasts.
12- Doubt as to Procedure: (In stroke play only) If during the play of a hole a competitor is doubtful of his rights or procedure, he may, without penalty, play a second ball as outlined in Rule 3-3. Prior to proceeding the player should announce he is invoking the rule and declare which ball he intends to score with.
13- Integral Parts of the Course: Includes cables, rods, wires or wrappings when closely attached to trees, liners in bunkers, railroad ties and other support walls when located in hazards, unless otherwise provided in Local Rules Addendum.
14- Temporary Immovable Obstruction: Local Rule in Appendix 1 is in effect.
15- Newly Sodded Areas: If a ball lies in or touches a sod seam, the player may, without penalty, lift the ball and clean it and drop the ball as near as possible to where it originally lay, not nearer the hole, where it avoids interference by the condition and is not in a hazard or on a putting green.

UGA Conditions of the Competition
Cellular Telephones- Cellular telephones are not permitted to be in use on the golf course during any UGA event.
Dress Code- Players must abide by the UGA dress code for the event and by the dress code of the hosting facility. The UGA encourages neat and clean clothing, and in all tournaments prohibits jeans, levis, and denims and requires a collared shirt. Each player is responsible to know the dress code. At the Utah State Amateur shorts are not permitted, including the qualifying rounds.Caddies may wear Bermuda length shorts and must have a collared shirt.
Shoes: Shall comply with the host course policy.
Sportsmanship, Personal Conduct- The UGA expects a high standard of conduct and sportsmanship from all players in UGA events. Players who conduct themselves in a discourteous or unsportsmanlike manner are subject to disqualification at any UGA event according to the discretion of the tournament committee. The UGA Board of Directors could extend the disqualification to some additional future events if circumstances warrant.
Foul and abusive language, cheating, throwing clubs, drinking alcohol in excess on the course, and showing disrespect for club facilities, tournament officials, spectators, and fellow competitors are actions subject to disqualification. If a player is disqualified for any of the above reasons he shall not be permitted to continue play in that particular tournament and shall be asked to leave the course if his conduct remains threatening or inconsiderate. Conduct of a player will be a consideration in the selection of all participants in UGA team events.
